LEADERSHIP ROCHESTER ANNOUNCES THE LAUNCH OF THE EMERGING LEADERS PROGRAM

Modeled off of the success of its core program, Leadership Rochester’s Emerging Leaders program will build youth leadership through meaningful engagement in real community issues. This program has established a class of 20 high school students (sophomore and junior) from diverse backgrounds and will bring them together for monthly program sessions beginning this weekend with a two day overnight retreat. Students have been selected from urban, suburban, private and public schools. The schools include Bishop Kearney, Freddie Thomas High School, Greece Arcadia, Greece Olympia, The Harley School, Northeast College Preparatory School, Pittsford Sutherland, and Wilson Magnet High School. Over the course of six months, participants will confront issues facing a multicultural society and work individually and as a team to improve Rochester through ideas and actions. Participants will create a culminating project to be presented at the graduation ceremony in May, as well as an individual project that will extend beyond their participation in the Emerging Leaders Program. Workshop sessions will be led by prominent executives, community leaders, government officials and higher education administrators and faculty. Each program session will be uniquely focused on a different topic regarding important issues within our community.

Topics for these sessions will include:

·   Government and Leadership – Participants will meet with local elected officials and government agencies to expose youth to local issues and potential solutions

·   Building Common Ground – This day will have a Rochester focus; viewing of July ’64 documentary with discussion; Examining Dialogue vs. Debate, Active Listening and Collective Intelligence

·   Education – Will look at varying schools in the Greater Rochester Area; discuss personal experiences of group participants, as well as potential for school exchange

·   Media Literacy – Using Critical Thinking to examine the media as well as modern technology, examine how news is conveyed to the public and ad exploitation with a focus on teen and youth targeting

Executive Director Josanne Reaves states, “the Emerging Leaders Program underscores Leadership Rochester’s mission to… “create and continuously support a legacy of leaders for the greater Rochester area.” This Emerging Leaders program will provide an unparalleled opportunity for area youth of all backgrounds to come together and will equip them with key skills, knowledge and contacts to better prepare them to contribute to the future of the Greater Rochester area.”

The planning committee is comprised of Leadership Rochester alumni: Rick DeJesus-Rueff '05, Rod Green '05, Nancy Johns-Price '06, Peter Rosenthal '07, Conor Cusack '10 and Chris Hartman '10. Additional volunteers at the retreat include: Linda Miller '07, Andrew Quagliata '08, Colette Shaw '10 and LR Board Member Dana Miller.

This program is funded by Rochester Area Community Foundation with additional funding from Rochester City Councilmember Dana Miller and Hillside Work Scholarship Connection.

Monthly Breakfast at Open Door Mission

Every year, as part of Leadership Rochester's Who Takes Care of Whom Program Day, the class will serve a hot breakfast at various shelters in Rochester.  A small group from the Class of 2008 that visited Open Door Mission decided to continue the service to this particular mission.  The group meets on the last Friday of every month at 6:30am to cook breakfast for the 40 men who are able to benefit from the services the shelter provides.  For the first year, each member of the group would donate the meal who are able to benefit from the services the shelter provides.  For the first year, each member of the group would donate the meal for that month.  Now the current group is seeking sponsors to help continue the tradition.  For more information, contact LR@leadershiprochester.org

School #28 PENCIL Partnership

Leadership Rochester class members and alumni joined the over 600 elementary school students of Henry Hudson School #28 in the school’s cafeteria on Thursday November 13 for a Mix It Up lunch social. Mix It Up is a nationwide campaign that supports students who want to identify, question, and cross social boundaries that separate them from each other and help build inclusive, welcome learning environments.

Leadership Rochester first established a partnership with the City School District in 2007 to capitalize on the collective talents, diversity, and interests of alumni. Some ways Leadership Rochester members, alumni and friends are participating in this partnership include:

  • Reading in classrooms as part of Parent-Teacher Association program "Parents as Reading Partners"
  • Teaching computer skills on Parents' Night
  • Helping a 5th grade class write, illustrate and publish a book
  • Leading activities with students and families on Math Night
  • Delivering baskets to students' families at holiday time
  • helping student performers prepare for their production of "Seussical the Musical"
  • organized a book drive and class read for the school's 2nd grade where every student left with at least one new book and read with a Leadership Rochester class member (over 300 books were collected)
